THEMA: Importing Internet Games into CPT

Importing Internet Games into CPT 10 Jahre 8 Monate ago #54

Hello all

If like me you use a tablet to play internet chess I often have the games emailed to me.

However using for example MS Outlook to cut and paste the game from the email into, say, Chessbase so that ultimately you can import them into the CPT program (Run Against Games) is quite tedious.

Has anyone else tried this and searched for an easy solution?

I am sure it should be possible to automate the task under Windows 7 – for example – Open Chessbase, Open MS Outlook, Locate first email, Select All, Cut, delete email, Goto Chessbase, open new game, paste game, save, goto MS Outlook, locate next email … and repeat….

Anyone know how to - any advice welcomed?

Most chess software will import PGN files. Can you just save all the emails into one text file then format to PGN and import all at once?

To import a PGN you just need the PGN header text and move list. If your emailed games are not already in PGN, you can copy/paste a basic PGN header at the top of each game and add what game info you want.

Hi Mahlon

Importing the games from the text email is not a problem in itself. The problem comes when you have hundreds of emails and have to laboriously go through each one to do the cut and paste routines.

However since posting, I have done a little searching and found a free software programme called "Do It Again" that does the job! You simply perform the action once, whilst the program records your entries, then set it up to run (and repeat as many times as needed). It took over 800 emailed games for me and performed the actions required to load them as new games in my Chessbase application. Cool!

Thanks
Dave

The following solution works for Thunderbird. I don't know if there is a similar way for Outlook:
In thunderbird, I created a local folder named "fics.pgn" and a filter which moves all corresponding mails to that folder.

Thunderbird creates a file named fics.pgn in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\[...]\Mail\Local Folders\
This file contains all my games in plain text and can just imported in CPT (The mail header stuff which is also contained in the file is ignored).

Greetings
Peter

What site/app are you playing on? Most internet chess sites will allow you to download a PGN of your past games, or games since a date. Perhaps if you log into their web site occasionally (rather than the tablet app) you can download multiple games at once as a single PGN making your life easier.

EDIT: Sorry just realized I resurrected an ancient post
